Buy local, by jove
Another awesome infographic, this time on why buy local.
Some things are intuitive, like the carbon emissions and energy impact of flying stuff by plane rather than shipping by boat. If you live in New York a bottle of wine shipped from France has less environmental impact than one flown from California – I will leave the debate on which one tastes better to others.
So buying local not only reduces footprint it also creates more re-investment in the local community – 64% from locally owned businesses gets reinvested compared to 35% from national chains.
Food from local sources requires less packaging to stop the food from spoiling, and packaging from food has less recycling rates than other packaging. How often have you been frustrated with the amount of packaging used for a single food item.
There are lots of reasons to buy local, what are the reasons not to?
I could have used this information in my latest post! http://www.theginiapp.com/?p=169 The buy local movement is really important to the prosperity of the US. I am building a tool that will make the benefits of the buy local movement apparent to all consumers!
Sounds like a great app. Look forward to an Australian version.
